Opinion

(Original Question)

Some people suggest that a country should try to produce all the food for its population and import as little food as possible.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, some people argue that a country should aim to produce all the food needed by its population and rely as little as possible on imports. In my view, this suggestion is neither realistic nor beneficial in the modern world, and importing food should not be discouraged.

To begin with, food imports significantly increase the range of choices available to consumers. Compared with the past, people today generally enjoy higher incomes and better living standards, which naturally leads to greater demand for diverse diets. Imported food makes it possible for consumers to enjoy products that cannot be grown locally or are unavailable in certain seasons. For instance, fruits and vegetables from other countries allow people to maintain a balanced diet throughout the year. In addition, competition among domestic and foreign producers often helps keep food prices affordable, benefiting ordinary families.

Another important advantage of food import and export lies in its contribution to economic development, especially for exporting regions. When agricultural products are sold to overseas markets, local farmers can earn higher incomes, while governments gain additional tax revenue. This extra income can then be invested in public services such as education, healthcare and infrastructure. As a result, both individuals and society as a whole can enjoy an improved quality of life. From this perspective, international food trade creates a win-win situation rather than harming national interests.

Admittedly, transporting food across long distances requires large amounts of fuel and labour, which may raise concerns about environmental impact and cost. Moreover, some imported products can be quite expensive by the time they reach local markets. However, these drawbacks should not be exaggerated. Consumers are free to decide whether or not to purchase imported goods, and domestic products remain available as alternatives. Therefore, the existence of imports does not force anyone to buy them but simply offers more options.

In conclusion, although producing food locally is important, completely avoiding food imports is neither practical nor desirable. Given the clear benefits in terms of consumer choice and economic growth, importing food remains fully justified in today’s globalised world.
