On the one hand, supporters of free university education argue that it promotes equal opportunities. If higher education is funded entirely by the government, students from low-income backgrounds can access university without financial pressure. This may help create a more educated workforce and reduce social inequality in the long term. From this perspective, free education is seen as an investment in a country’s future development.
On the other hand, there are strong reasons why students should pay for their own university education. Government budgets are limited, and allocating large amounts of public money to higher education may reduce funding for other essential services such as healthcare and primary education. Moreover, when students invest their own money in education, they tend to take their studies more seriously and make better use of learning resources. As university graduates often enjoy higher salaries and better career prospects, it is reasonable for them to share part of the cost.
In my opinion, although financial support should be provided to students who cannot afford tuition fees, higher education should not be completely free for everyone. A system that combines student contributions with government assistance, such as scholarships or student loans, is more sustainable and fair.
In conclusion, while free university education can improve access and equality, asking students to pay for their studies encourages responsibility and ensures the efficient use of public resources. Therefore, students should contribute to the cost of their university education.
