一篇帮你突破“低效刷题”的关键阅读训练
English Reading Passage
When Practice Doesn’t Lead to Speed
Sophie believed that practice was the key to improvement.
So she practiced reading every day.
She completed passage after passage, underlined new words, and carefully checked her answers. Her teacher often praised her effort①, and she felt that she was doing everything right.
But there was one problem she couldn’t ignore.
Her reading speed didn’t change.
No matter how many passages she completed, she still read slowly. Each sentence required careful attention, and she often went back to reread parts she didn’t fully understand.
This made her feel confused and slightly frustrated②.
“I’m practicing so much,” she thought, “so why am I not improving?”
At first, she believed she just needed more time.
So she continued.
Days turned into weeks. Her practice increased, but her speed stayed almost the same.
One day, during a reading session, something unusual happened.
She realized that she wasn’t actually reading for meaning.
She was reading word by word.
Every unfamiliar word stopped her. Every difficult sentence slowed her down. She was focusing too much on small details, and not enough on the overall meaning③.
That realization surprised her.
She had been practicing a lot, but not in the right way.
Later that day, she discussed this with her teacher.
“I feel like I read too slowly,” Sophie said.
The teacher nodded and asked, “What do you focus on when you read?”
Sophie thought for a moment. “Every word,” she answered.
“That might be the problem,” the teacher explained.
“Reading is not about understanding every word. It is about understanding the meaning③ of the whole text.”
That idea changed Sophie’s perspective.
The next time she practiced reading, she tried something new.
Instead of stopping at every unfamiliar word, she continued reading. She focused on the general idea. She tried to guess meanings from context.
At first, it felt uncomfortable.
She worried that she might miss important details.
But slowly, something began to change.
Her reading became smoother. She paused less. Her focus④ shifted from individual words to overall understanding.
As a result, her speed began to improve⑤.
It wasn’t a sudden change. But over time, she noticed that she could finish passages more quickly.
More importantly, she still understood the main ideas.
Sophie learned that not all practice leads to improvement.
Only the right kind of practice does.
Reading faster is not about rushing.
It is about changing how you read.
