English Reading Passage

When Learning Starts to Feel Empty

Oliver had been studying hard for months.

Every day, he followed his routine. He reviewed vocabulary, practiced reading, and completed exercises on time. From the outside, everything seemed perfect.

But inside, something was changing.

At first, it was just a small feeling. He noticed that he no longer felt excited when he learned something new. The sense of interest① he once had was slowly fading.

He didn’t think too much about it.

“Maybe I’m just tired,” he told himself.

So he continued.

Days turned into weeks. His routine stayed the same, but his emotions didn’t. Learning started to feel like a task, not something meaningful.

He began to lose his focus②.

While reading, his eyes moved across the page, but his mind wandered. He could still understand the words, but the process felt empty.

This made him feel strangely tired③.

Not physically, but mentally.

One afternoon, he closed his book and stared at his desk. He asked himself a question he had never asked before:

“Why am I doing this?”

That question didn’t have an immediate answer.

Oliver realized that he had been following his routine without thinking. He was completing tasks, but he had lost his sense of purpose④.

Without purpose, even simple tasks felt heavy.

That evening, instead of continuing his usual study plan, he decided to take a break.

Not just a short rest, but a real pause.

At first, he felt uncomfortable. He worried that stopping would slow his progress⑤.

But at the same time, he knew that continuing without meaning wasn’t helping either.

During that break, Oliver began to reflect.

He thought about why he started learning in the first place. He remembered the curiosity he once had—the desire to understand new ideas and express himself better.

Slowly, that memory brought back a small sense of interest①.

When he returned to studying a few days later, he made a change.

He didn’t try to do everything.

Instead, he focused on fewer tasks, but with more attention. He read slowly. He asked himself questions. He tried to connect what he learned with his own thoughts.

Gradually, his focus② improved.

The feeling of emptiness didn’t disappear immediately. But it became weaker.

More importantly, he started to feel engaged again.

Weeks later, Oliver noticed something different.

His progress⑤ was not faster than before, but it felt more real.

He understood what he was learning. He remembered more. And most importantly, he no longer felt lost.

Oliver learned that learning is not just about doing more.

It is about staying connected to your purpose④.

Because when purpose disappears, effort becomes empty.

But when purpose returns, even small steps feel meaningful again.
