It is widely believed that students’ academic performance should be assessed primarily through examinations. While exams can provide a standardized way of evaluating knowledge, I do not agree that they should be the main method of assessment.
On the one hand, examinations offer a fair and efficient means of evaluation. Since all students are tested under the same conditions, exams allow for objective comparison of academic performance. In addition, they can effectively measure how well students understand and retain the material they have learned during a course.
On the other hand, relying mainly on examinations has significant limitations. Exams often focus on memorization and short-term performance rather than long-term understanding. As a result, important skills such as creativity, critical thinking and teamwork may be overlooked. Furthermore, excessive emphasis on exams can lead to an exam-oriented education system, where students are more concerned with achieving high scores than gaining genuine knowledge.
In conclusion, although examinations are a useful tool for assessing academic performance, they should not be the primary method. A more balanced approach that includes coursework, projects and continuous assessment would provide a more accurate evaluation of students’ abilities.
